The Last King of Sparta – Mystery Science

Nabis went down in history as last king of spartabut also as a rather particular character due to the number of reforms it did so both socially and economically. However, this would bring about his end and that of one of the most iconic companies in history.

expropriation of property of the upper classes to distribute them to the poorest, to abolish the debts of the poor, freed all slaves and gave them in marriage to the wives and daughters of the exiles. These are some of the reforms that they changed the course of sparta until his last days.

Considered a tyrant by some, and a great king by others. The truth is that the history of Nabis, the last Spartan king, is somewhat uncertain, but the only sure thing is that his death would also bring the end of the nation.

King Nabis

Ancient historians present him as a despot, selfish, sinful and greedy. Same polybius reduces him to a “pirate” and Pausanias shrine thief.

However, despite the fact that Nabis was not a saint, he was also not evil incarnate, as shown in literary works. Other documents imply that he was intelligent, able to take drastic measures for the welfare of his people and his foreign policy.

When he ascended the throne, he eliminated council of elders and to the ephors or magistrates. He also reinforced the army, hired mercenaries and re-established the Spartan education system. He strengthened and consolidated the city walls and created a fleet that promoted trade and craftsmanship.

Once he had “settled” the internal problems, he returned to foreign policy treaties, negotiated with his former enemies, and even broached certain subjects with Rome.

It was so Titus Quinctius FlamininusRoman soldier and politician, sent a delegate to Sparta, asking Nabis to return the conquered cities and join the Achaean League, or confederation of the cities of Achaia. If he refused, they would declare war on him.

To put pressure on him, they set up a camp at the foot of the walls of Sparta, but this does not intimidate the king, who refuses. Thus, the council of war, led by the Greeks, was in favor of attacking them.

The Last King of Sparta – Mystery Science

Nabis recruited 10,000 warriors experts, helots and Spartans, also hired 3,000 mercenaries and freed the slaves. Despite everything, the Romans succeeded in subduing them by burning the fields that surrounded the city and blocking its only outlet to the sea.

Flamininus forced the king to negotiate peace during a truce of 6 months, as long as he surrendered, delivered his fleet, paid indemnity for 8 years and did not establish alliances.

As expected, Nabis refused and Rome attacked. The problem is that the siege was delayed by the surrounding narrow streets of Sparta and this gave time to call for help.

In 192 BC C., the Aetolian army came to Sparta as an ally, but it was short-lived. The Aetolian General Alexamenus he betrayed the king, killing him.
